Farne Islands - Northumberland
Join me on the wonder that is the Farne Islands. On the Northumberland coast, in the Spring and Summer months, the Farne Islands plays host to an amazing variety of bird life including Puffins, Razorbills, Guillemots, Shags, and Arctic and Common Terns. Even David Attenborough has called these islands his favourite place in the UK to see nature at its best. It has been called one of the top ten best places to photograph wildlife in the UK by both The Guardian and Countryfile.
These courses can be booked as 1 or 2 days depending on what you would like. I have extensive experience of both islands having visited since 2010. Each workshop can be aimed at beginner and experienced photographers alike - I will do my best to get everything you want out of the day/s.
I approach all my workshops with a relaxed and informative attitude to make it a fun and enjoyable day. It will be my personal goal to ensure you come away with not only some great photos from the day but also some camera techniques to capture wildlife like composition and motion blur.
The main focus of most visiting the Farne Islands is the iconic Puffin. However, there is a wealth of other bird life and we can focus as much time on each species as you'd like.
We will meet in the harbour of Seahouses at 9am and spend some time going over camera settings before boarding the boat we take to get to two islands, Staple Island and Inner Farne.
The boat trip will take us around Staple Island before landing in the morning, and then on to Inner Farne for the afternoon. We will have 2 hours on each island - ample time to soak up the amazing sights and come away with plenty of images. Both islands offer a different portfolio of images to be had:
Staple Island - the island is a rocky landscape giving plenty of opportunities to work with Puffins, Razorbills, Guillemots and Shags on lichen covered rocks, as well as chances for in-flight shots.
Inner Farne - this island has much more foliage with a range of different images of Puffins emerging from their burrows and Arctic and Common Terns nesting.
The boat will also cruise around all the islands to view nesting seabirds on the cliff faces and a Grey Seal colony at different vantage points.
I always recommend sturdy footwear and layers of clothing. Depending on the weather the temperature and conditions can change constantly through the day, so it is best to prepare. I will advise any special requirements for footwear/clothing depending on subject and time of year at the booking stage.
These workshops are available from the beginning of May to the end of July.
The jetty at Staple Island may not be accessible due to weather/tidal conditions. The skipper's decision is final.
In the event of adverse weather conditions causing the boat trip to be cancelled I will offer a choice of refund or alternative date.
